Introduction: A child's attachment is foundational to their development across various dimensions. Among these, moral development in school-aged children in Iran has not been sufficiently studied. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the relationship between attachment and moral development in primary school students in Tehran.
Methods: This descriptive-correlational study included all first-grade elementary students enrolled in Tehran during the 2023-2024 academic year. Multi-stage cluster sampling was employed, resulting in 210 correctly completed questionnaires from girls and 241 from boys. Data were collected using the Middle Childhood Attachment Questionnaire (Halpern & Kopenberg, 2006) and the Children’s Moral Development Scale (Lotfabadi) through self-reporting. Pearson’s correlation test was conducted using SPSS 16 for statistical analysis.
Results: The data revealed that children had a mean age of 8.032 ± 0.691 years, with 46.6% being female. Most children (88.2%) were from middle-income families, and 46.6% were in third grade. The majority of mothers (58.5%) were homemakers, while 93.6% of fathers were employed. All families were nuclear, and no psychological disorders were reported among family members. However, 6% of children had psychological issues, specifically hyperactivity. The mean moral development score was 160.76 ± 29.73, and the mean attachment score was 60.41 ± 11.91. No significant correlation was found between attachment and moral development (P = 0.569, Pearson’s coefficient = 0.027).
Conclusion: The results indicate no significant relationship between attachment and moral development in school-aged children. This finding suggests the potential influence of other factors, such as education and social modeling, during the school years, which may overshadow the presumed association between these variables. Future studies should examine additional influential factors, including education and social role models, in moral development.
