Introduction: Group cognitive-behavioral therapy is one of the effective approaches to improving interpersonal and family relationships that focuses on changing dysfunctional thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This method can help improve marital intimacy among couples by increasing self-awareness and communication skills. It can also help reduce tensions and improve interactions among married women in marital relationships by teaching healthy conflict resolution styles. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the effect of group cognitive-behavioral therapy on marital intimacy and conflict resolution styles of married women.
Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design and a control group. The statistical population of this study included all women referring to clinics in Islamshahr in 2024, of which 30 were selected purposively and randomly assigned to an experimental group and a control group. The measurement tools included the Bagarozi Marital Intimacy Questionnaire (2001, MIQ) and the Rahim Conflict Resolution Styles Questionnaire (1983, ROCI-II). The experimental group received group cognitive-behavioral therapy training in eight sessions, one session per week for 90 minutes. The analysis of covariance method was used with SPSS version 26 software to analyze the data.
Results: The findings showed that before the intervention, the experimental and control groups did not differ significantly in terms of marital intimacy and conflict resolution styles, but after the intervention, the groups differed significantly in terms of both variables (P<0.01). In other words, group cognitive-behavioral therapy increased marital intimacy and improved conflict resolution styles of married women.
Conclusions: The results of the study showed that group cognitive-behavioral therapy has a significant effect on increasing marital intimacy and improving conflict resolution styles of married women. Participation in group sessions of this therapy has strengthened mutual understanding, empathy, and communication skills between couples. As a result, this approach can be suggested as a practical and effective method for improving the quality of marital relationships and reducing family conflicts.
