Introduction: Following diabetes, there are many physical and psychological problems for people with problems such as family functioning and reduced marital adjustment. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of group-based cognitive therapy based on mind-awareness on family function and marital adjustment of couples with type 2 diabetes.
Method: The present study was a semi experimental, pretest-posttest with control group. The statistical population of the study consisted of all couples with type 2 diabetes who referred to health centers in Tehran and the sample included 32 couples who had one of them diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and were in the process of treatment. The subjects were selected during the period from October to March 2017 and assigned to two experimental groups (16 patients) and control (n = 16). The experimental group was subjected to intervention using mind-cognitive-based cognitive therapy for 8 sessions and the data were collected using Family Performance and Marital Compliance Questionnaire. To analyze the data, multivariate covariance analysis was used and data were analyzed using SPSS v.22 statistical software.
Results: The results of data analysis showed that there was a significant difference between the mean score of family function components and marital adjustment in the experimental and control groups in the post-test, and cognitive therapy based on mind-awareness increased the total score of family function (P <0.05; F = 078/3) and marital adjustment (P <0.05, F = 520/4) in the experimental group and in the post-test phase.
Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, psychological interventions such as cognitive therapy based on mind-awareness on family function and marital adjustment of patients with type 2 diabetes have beneficial effects.
