Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Pharmacy Technicians on Over-The-Counter Drugs

Objectives:Over-The-Counter (OTC) drugs, those that are available to patients without a prescription, generally sold by pharmacy technicians. The most common cause of drug errors is over-the-counter medications. A pharmaceutical technician is a provider of medical services that operates in a pharmacy under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Due to the importance of the activities of pharmaceutical technicians and the impact they can have on the health of people in the community, in this study, their knowledge, attitudes and performance regarding over-the-counter drugs were evaluated.
Methods:KAP of pharmacy technicians about OTC drugs was evaluated by a Structured questionnaire.. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statics version 26 by Chi-Square test and Pearson correlation coefficients.
Results:After analyzing the data, it was found that the lower their experience as a pharmacy technician and their qualification, they stated that they had more information about OTC drugs. Also, there was a significant relationship between work experience, passing the course of pharmaceutical technician and the level of education by referring patients to the pharmacy technician.
Conclusion:In order to reduce drug errors caused by the mistakes of pharmacy technicians and increase the level of health of the community, it is necessary to create a codified and centralized educational structure for teaching and measuring knowledge, attitudes and performance of pharmacy technicians.
