Promoting professional autonomy in nursing: providing a policy brief

Introduction: Independent care is one of the priorities of nursing, which is associated with the improvement of patient-related outcomes and promotion of nursing professional values. At the same time, gaining independence has always been one of the main challenges of professionalism in nursing throughout history.
Method: An interview was held with a group of experts and stakeholders on the topic of professional independence in nursing. After being written, the presented materials were analyzed and finalized by two authors independently. Then, by reviewing extensive texts with the keywords "Professional autonomy", Nursing, the dimensions of the problem became clear.
Findings: Based on the available literature and evidence, the following things can be considered in the independence of the nursing profession: reforming the nursing education program, changing the health system from treatment-oriented to community-oriented, and providing the context for providing nursing services at the community level. Caring for patients, strengthening cooperation between nurses and inter-professionals, standardizing nursing services, implementing the nurses' prescription program and developing nursing service tariffs.
conclusion: In order to achieve professional independence and considering factors related to professional independence, it is necessary to use the proposed policy options to maintain an effective workforce.
