The effectiveness of emotion-focused group therapy (EFT) on death anxiety and health concerns in people with complex post-traumatic stress disorder

Aims: People suffering from psychologically complex post-traumatic stress disorder have problems, especially in the field of death anxiety and health concerns, and one of the effective methods for improving the psychological characteristics of these people is emotion-focused therapy (EFT). The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of emotion-focused group therapy on death anxiety and health concerns of people suffering from complex post-traumatic stress disorder.
Methods: The method of the current research was semi-experimental, which was implemented with a pre-test and post-test design with a control group. The research population included people suffering from complex post-traumatic stress disorder who were referred to psychological and counseling centers in Isfahan city in 1402-1401 and 40 people were selected from among the volunteers by random sampling. The experiment (20 people) and control group (20 people) were replaced. Both groups completed two death anxiety questionnaires (Templer, 1970) and anxious thoughts (Wells, 1994) before and after the intervention. Members of the experimental group participated in emotion-focused group therapy for 8 2-hour sessions, but the control group did not receive any intervention. The collected data were analyzed using repeated measures variance analysis and using SPSS-25 software.
Results: The results showed that in death anxiety (F = 32.019, df = 1.322 and p < 0.01) and health concern (F = 81.998, df = 2 and p < 0.01) people with disorders Complex post-traumatic stress after the intervention showed a significant difference between the control and experimental groups (p<0.01).
Conclusion: The results of the research showed that group therapy focused on emotion-focused therapy is effective on death anxiety and health concerns of people with complex post-traumatic stress disorder; Therefore, it is recommended that therapists and clinical psychologists use emotion-focused therapy in addition to other methods to reduce death anxiety and health concerns in people suffering from complex post-traumatic stress.
