Introduction: Unsuccessful married life can have negative effects on the physical and mental health of family members. Marital conflicts resulting from inconsistency between husband and wife in the type of needs and the method of satisfying them, differences in requests, and inappropriate behavioral schemas also lead to stress between couples. The present study was conducted with the aim of determining the effectiveness of schema therapy on emotion regulation styles, emotional expression, and marital satisfaction in couples on the verge of divorce.
It was conducted.
Methods: The present study method was a semi-experimental, controlled, pre-test, post-test design with a control group. The statistical population of this study was all couples on the verge of divorce who referred to counseling centers in Dezful in 1403. Using convenient sampling, 52 couples on the verge of divorce were randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups of 26 people each. The Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ-P), Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire (EEQ), and the short form of the Enrich Marital Satisfaction Scale (EMS) were used to collect data. Schema therapy based on the model of Young et al. was implemented for the experimental group, which included 12 weekly 90-minute sessions. The data analysis method was descriptive statistics, mean and standard deviation, and inferential statistics, univariate and multivariate analysis of covariance.
Findings: The results showed that schema therapy was effective in reducing ineffective emotion regulation styles, increasing effective emotion regulation styles, increasing positive emotional expression, increasing intimacy expression, reducing negative emotional expression, and increasing marital satisfaction in couples on the verge of divorce (p<0.001).
Conclusion: The results of the study showed that schema therapy improved emotion regulation styles, emotional expression, and marital satisfaction in divorcing couples.
