Introduction: Relational obsessive-compulsive disorder (ROCD) is a form of interpersonal relationship damage that can cause widespread dissatisfaction. The present study aimed to determine the mediating role of relationship beliefs in the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and relational obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Methods: The present study was cross-sectional. The statistical population of this study was married people in Lahijan in 2023; in this study, 384 people were selected by convenience sampling and responded to the Relationship Beliefs Inventory (Edilson & Epstein, 1982), Young Schema Questionnaire (Yang et al., 2006), Partner-Related Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms Inventory (Qomian et al., 2019), and the Compulsive Communicative Inventory (Qomian et al., 2021). Data analysis was performed using structural equation modeling using SPSS and AMOS software versions 24.
Results: The findings showed that the proposed model has a favorable fit. The results showed that early maladaptive schemas (β=0.38) and relationship beliefs (β=0.21) had a direct and significant effect on relational obsessive-compulsive disorder (P<0.05); early maladaptive schemas also had a direct and significant effect on relationship beliefs (β=0.56) (P<0.05). The results of the bootstrap test showed that relationship beliefs (β=0.12) played a significant mediating role between early maladaptive schemas and relational obsessive-compulsive disorder (P<0.05); in fact, it can be said that early maladaptive schemas increase relational obsessive-compulsive disorder in married people through relationship beliefs.
Conclusions: From the overall findings of this study, it can be concluded that early maladaptive schemas had a direct and mediated effect on relational obsessive-compulsive disorder. According to the present findings, it is recommended to hold educational workshops aimed at improving maladaptive schemas and communication beliefs for couples.
