Introduction: In recent years, young individuals have been facing various challenges that have increased their psychological vulnerability. Accordingly, the present study aimed to investigate the relationship between cognitive functioning and suicidal tendency, with the mediating role of self-efficacy among young adults in Tehran. Methods: This research employed a descriptive-correlational design. The statistical population included all young adults aged 18 to 35 residing in Tehran in 2025. Using Cochran’s formula, and considering a 95% confidence level and a 5% margin of error, a sample size of 400 participants was determined. Cluster random sampling was carried out among 4 districts selected from 22 municipal districts of Tehran. Standardized tools were used for data collection, including the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (Version 3.8) to measure cognitive performance, the Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation, and the General Self-Efficacy Scale (Sherer). Data were analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistical methods, including structural equation modeling, using SPSS and AMOS software. Results: The findings indicated that poor cognitive performance is directly associated with an increased tendency toward suicide, while self-efficacy serves as a protective factor. Additionally, self-efficacy played a significant mediating role in the relationship between cognitive performance and suicidal tendency. Conclusion: These findings emphasize the importance of strengthening self-efficacy in reducing suicidal tendencies among young adults and can serve as a foundation for designing psychological interventions and preventive programs.
