Comparing the Effectiveness of Computerized Cognitive Rehabilitation with Therapist-Centered and Family-Centered Approaches on Cognitive Flexibility and Visuospatial Processing in Children with dyslexia

Introduction: Cognitive flexibility and visuospatial processing, as key cognitive components, play a decisive role in learning and academic performance. The present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of therapist-centered and family-centered interventions through computerized cognitive rehabilitation on improving cognitive flexibility and visuospatial processing in students with reading disorder.
Method: This research employed a quasi-experimental design with pretest, posttest, and follow-up, including a control group. The statistical population consisted of all students aged 8 to 12 years with reading learning disorders in Sirjan County, from whom 42 students with reading disorder were selected via convenience sampling and randomly assigned to three groups of 14 (therapist-centered, family-centered, and control). The instruments used were the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (Grant & Berg, 1948) and the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (Rey, 1942). The experimental groups received the "Maghzineh" computerized cognitive rehabilitation program for 24 days. In the family-centered approach, active and comprehensive family involvement was implemented, whereas the therapist-centered approach was delivered entirely on an individual basis without family participation. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS-23 software with a repeated-measures statistical model.
Results: Although the Maghzineh program overall had a statistically significant effect on improving cognitive flexibility and visuospatial processing (P < 0.05), the results specifically indicated that the effectiveness in the family-centered approach was significantly superior to that of the therapist-centered approach.
Conclusion: It can therefore be concluded that the Maghzineh computerized rehabilitation program is an effective intervention for enhancing cognitive flexibility and visuospatial processing in children with reading disorder, and that family-centered implementation of this program, with active parental involvement, yields more favorable outcomes, confirming the pivotal role of the family in the rehabilitation process.
